Overcoats - "When the Darkness Comes"
Overcoats is a New York based electro soul-folk duo of Wes alums Hana Elion ('15) and JJ Mitchel ('15). They've just dropped their latest single "Nighttime Hunger," the first release from the duo since last spring's debut EP. On "Nighttime Hunger" Hana and JJ's voices shine as brightly as ever, weaving through the worries, fears and loneliness that can be stored by day but, come night, emerge and consume you.
"nighttime hunger / and all the fears that it brings / tend to fade in the light / in daytime I build / a new me but still / dread the night"
Overcoats have expanded their sound with lush, immersive production, constructing a distinctive percussion track from striking bottles and other found objects outside their studio. Over a driving, infectiously wobbling bass line, the duo's voices soar through a chorus of ringing glass—if you're not ASMR triggered, your spine is probably tingling with sheer musical appreciation.
