NEW TONSIL HOCKEY EP GOT MY HEART RACING
Tonsil Hockey is a Wes power pop trio consisting of Jason Katzenstein, Zak Malik, and Adrien DeFontaine. They released an EP Good Luck on Tuesday, delivering three well-produced tracks full of crunchy power chords, catchy hooks, and mushy teenage angst. The EP’s self-titled track “Good Luck” is also its strongest, summing up the aforesaid concisely and without overreaching into a solid, fist-pumping anthem. Propulsive drums and a hopping bass line maintain the song’s energy while its frankly-delivered vocal hooks are sure to get stuck in your head. The catchy country-pop verses of “Area” buoy the track against its rather underwhelming chorus (which, I digress, shares a confusingly identical hook with Death Grips’ “Hacker”). “Cartoons” has a hard-driving punk edge and the EP’s most go-for-it lyrics, complete with heartbroken masturbation and drug use. Rocking out with an unabashed take on power pop, Tonsil Hockey’s Good Luck is definitely worth a listen.
