Weekend Preview 2/4 - 2/6
Eskimeaux
+ Told Slant & Slouch
Alpha Delt // Friday 10:00pm
Eskimeaux is the recording project of Gabrielle Smith, a founding member of The Epoch, a Brooklyn-based songwriting and art collective. They sound like I. ear comfort II. ruminations on love and loneliness III. quiet relatability III. drums beating out tender secrets IV. intimate, gut-wrenching candor V. a celestial slow-burn VI. knowing, misty eyes. Come for the sparse indie-folk and ethereal pop in richly composed arrangements, stay for the ~feels~ that make you want to smile, dance and vomit your heart out. "If I had a dime for every time I'm freaking out//We could fly around the world or just get out of your parents' house"... you see? You're already vomiting your heart out :)
Told Slant, also Brooklyn-based and part of The Epoch, is the music of Felix Walworth. They are a bedroom punk band that plays music that is raw and thoughtful with songs so heartfelt and full of emotion you will probably tear up.
Slouch is a thrashing good time. Slouch is modernist rock furniture. Slouch is Sallie Fullerton, Shea Fitzpatrick, Kafilah Muhammad, and Ben Klausner (usually Lucas Hegewisch) (all '18). Come see them do awesome rock things.
Ladies Night // the feeling's right
Eclectic // Friday 11:00 pm
The thirsty girls of Eclectic are djing a massive dancing situation. We're talking about:
prettygirl865
tat & rowan
kfeelz & adi-j/a dj katie
bridollaz
Gaby (aka sLiCes)
mishi
It's the first of what will hopefully be a regular series of parties DJ'd exclusively by female-identifying people.
This is definition hype.
Ladies First’s CypHER
6 Lawn // Friday 8:30 pm
Straight from the Facebook data-mind: "Every Friday at 8pm, Ladies First is having a cypher! Location may change. Bring your voice, your art, your energy, and/or your friends and light up the room with your presence. LADIES ONLY! It's an open space with good vibes. Come and see what the talented women on campus have to offer! It will be a chill night. Let Shirley Fang know if you have any song requests."
Jess Best
+ Trot Fox & The Good Lonely
Earth House // Saturday 8:00 pm
Wesleyan alumni Jess Best (former member of Wes funk establishment Sky Bars) brings soulful RnB back to campus with her signature groovy vocal stylings and intimate instrumentation. Jess Best comes flanked by a talented backing band, whose dense vocal clouds, smooth keys, and tight bass rhythms will ensure your hips won’t cease to sway across the polished floor of Earth House’s living room. Mhmhmm, it's been too long.
Trot Fox are Wes alums (+ friends) Gabe Gordon, Nate Mondschein, Declan O’Connell, and Claire Randall. Taking the campus by storm in a triumphant return, they're described on Soundcloud as “mmmm sounds like Haitus [Kaiyote,]” “sadly muna man,” and “REALLY GOO" MUSIC.” This weekend they’ll be “fixin’ up funky soulrock tunes to pleasure your earholes."
The Good Lonely are new freshman band playing some new tunes–sick!!! Their new single "Madame Chameleon and Bootsnake" is slotted for a 2016 release. Maybe they'll play it live, with gusto.
Wiki
+ DJ Lucas with Dark World guests
& Max GertleR
Eclectic // Saturday 10:00 pm
Wiki One Eyebrow is back to kick it. We had brunch with Ratking a year ago, and scrappy-flowing frontman Wiki will be very much, 100%, totally, without a doubt returned to campus on Saturday, ready to turn up in someone's kitchen--maybe it'll be yours. Wiki rips rhymes with raw punk intensity and loves Lil' Herb. Slim Shady comparisons abound. <3 moms.
DJ Lucas is on the schoolbus with Wiki, hitting east coast higher-learning scenes with his growling lo-fi hype rap. Dark World are a prolific Western Mass fight club, swaggering into your barbecue and putting drugs in the lemonade. He will ruin your Armstrong (yellow rubber wrist noodle(?)) game.
Max Gertler is delving into the uncharted territory of being a young male rapper from New York City, performing some hype tracks from his new album I THINK I HAVE A PROBLEM; BUT I FUCK WITH IT. @MaxGertler (Twitter handle: FaFa AKA Fin Spank) gained fame from a tweet Tyler the Creator posted, thanking him for a box of Waffle Crisps that Max gave him. Max Gertler is a huge Eminem fan, sporting a tattoo to represent this inspiring presence in his life, as well as citing him as the Best Rapper of All Time (he told me this when I met him at a party in Brooklyn one time).
We'll get through this.
