Weekend Preview // 2/5 - 2/7
Girlpool (+Beverly Tender)
Artmuho // Thursday 9 PM
Girlpool are cute screaming, guitar fuzz, punching “Tommy” in the mouth, and a “cool” new term “slutmouth”; these all will be parts of this week’s hot Thursday Art House show. “I don’t wanna get fucked by a fucked society”” she’ll sing to you. The two of them will sing to you. Blah blah blah blah. Either you’re into the pseudo-adolescent feminist punk or you’re not, but these girls are doing it with good uniqueness (aka will be memorable).
Beverly Tender is Molly Hasting's cold tender pop project. Cuddle with a puppy-shaped icicle.
Chef (+Rhys Langston & Indi)
X House // Friday 10 PM
Chef make their highly anticipated, popsicle-brandishing return this Friday night. They’re the biggest, some might say funkiest band on campus, and come Friday they intend to leave no doubt as to the truth of the latter. Word is that they’ve been hard at work crafting a potent feast of new originals and covers to serve up to you in grand, bass-slahbpnnn style. Maybe skip dinner for this one. This decatet will fill you up.
Rhys Lanston's heady hip-hop dives deep into dizzying wordplay and philosophical musing, his rhymes floating through the jazzy ambiance of inventive, sample-heavy beats.
Stolen Jars (+Birchbark)
Earth House // Friday 10 PM
Stolen Jars brings back a neglected sound in the mainstream: simple, soft acoustic. So often now bands are trying to be something different, but sometimes all it takes is a pleasant melody to make a great song. This duo craft upbeat folk that's both sincere and pleasant. Mmm.
Diva Night!
WestCo Café // Friday 10 PM
If you haven’t noticed, there haven’t been many (any?) girl DJs performing at Wes lately. Olivia Morris and Maya Lockman-Fine are trying to fix that. Puff Mommy, Dylan Vicky, DJ Leafy Greens, Five Foot Seven, & DJ Jessie W are bringing their feminine energy to the Westco Cafe this Friday. Come celebrate Diva Cups and feminine hygiene! They will also be taking donations in the form of wrapped feminine hygiene products or $$$ (which will be used to buy Diva Cups), to be given to a homeless shelter nearby.
Coma Cinema (+Five Guys)
Eclectic // Saturday 10 PM
It doesn’t feel like anyone’s thought to give a color to suicide before, but Coma Cinema has done it. From South Carolina, singer songwriter Mat Cothran does indie-pop with a certain overtone that feels a little less blue than “blue” suicide. From an alive band (they are playing at Wesleyan), newest LP Posthumous Release is probably the most hilariously depressing album title to follow Blue Suicide.
Five Guys are back. Mangus, Nethan, Lick, Eo, and Iam will "Hock loogies, touch boobies, smoke doobies." All at the same time? Come find out.
All-Caps Ladd (+Double Twins & Since 1902)
pine Palace // Saturday 10 PM
Flu-bound no longer, all-caps LADD will make their 2015 debut at the old haunt on Pine. Expect an intimate and sweaty respite from all that white shit outside. The interweaving guitars, yearning vocals, a rock-steady rhythm section of these wholesome rockers is starting to cement itself in the campus hive mind. Come become a part of the whole.
Facebook calls The Double Twins "the light in the darkness of the emerging mid-fi spacesynth scene ." YouTube knows them as quirky horse-mask pop aficionados. What do you think of this musical band group? Email thedoubletwins@pinepalace@10:45butprobablymorelike11:15@wesleyan.edu for the answer.
Since 1902 is the former Wes indie-rock staple Roberts Don, and, the former start-of-this-sentence-bold-text Since 1902 themselves. These guys are post-something. Time feels unstable. Einstein was wrong? Come and find out under the influence of these guys' Irish pirate rockabilly.
McLovins (+Rui Barbosa)
WestCo Café // Saturday 10 PM
McLovins is a super funky four-part jam band from Hartford who just completed a national tour in January. Embracing the unique approach of a four-person fronted band, Mclovins incorporates smooth harmonies and electric improvisations to make each of their live performances as soulfully delicious and intriguing as the next. Come check them out this weekend as they bring some of their groovy magic to the WestCo Café.
Rui Barbosa, Wesleyan’s favorite jam band trio who takes a special interest in 19th century Brazilian politicians, will open the night with some fun, jazzy jams.
AE Pi Space Jam
La Casa // Friday 10 PM
“Do you want to be warm this weekend?” space jamz is about to get weird--come on down to la casa, and don’t forget to throw on your basketball jersey and JAM! This event is going to be a slam dunk of tunes. Get ready to shoot a real three pointer with the killer triple line up of Schoolboy Jew, Dynamik, and Ronbeatz! Dang it’s gunna be ballin’! These tunes are some real electro bangers, with the bass dropping almost as much as the ball hits the net. So get ready to bring out your inner Larry Bird on the dance floor.
