LISTEN TO THESE GIRLS CHERRY GLAZERR

It’s hard out here, trying to stay occupied and informed without the steady stream of new, free, diverse, and predominantly bangin’ live music that Wesleyan usually affords us on a more-than-weekly basis. I sometimes feel like I’ve come home from a playdate at Diddy’s house, and summer break has a difficult time keeping up. That’s not to say that there aren’t cool things going on in the outside world- it’s just hard to beat the volume of and accessibility to new music at Wes. One cool new thing I would mention is a band called Cherry Glazerr that I would like to show some love to- hit the jump!

ASKING MY HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS ABOUT BUZZBANDS THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT

My friends from high school do not give a shit about a band's influences, genre, politics, or contribution to the art world in general, and that's why I love talking to them about music. As much as I like reading pretentious internet opinions about why Savages are leading the much-needed feminist resurrection of really corny post-punk or whether Yeezus sends a responsible political message amidst its nuanced exploration depraved sex acts, it's refreshing to hear what people who use the internet exclusively for pornography think about some of the most discussed music this year. To get a sense of some of the previous research I've conducted in this field, I've detailed some of my friends' more incendiary opinions and musical preferences: Ethan thinks Radiohead's Kid A sounds like "broken computer Coldplay sex sounds," and Animal Collective has "like two good songs but is mostly just really fucking annoying." He's gotten really into classic rock recently, so he updated his cover photo on Facebook to the cover of some Yes album and plays "Blinded By the Light" literally every time I've been in his car over the past three weeks.

AURALWEST: SURFER BLOOD

As you all know I like concerts. But I love concerts in untraditional venues. This is of course assuming the sound is adequate. What’s better than a Deerhoof show? A Deerhoof show in the natural history museum (true story). I cannot stress how much a venue can make a difference. Kendrick Lamar is apparently great live at music festivals… I wouldn’t know, I saw him in a hockey rink. Venues matter.

SHOW DIARIES #1

It’s easy to go to a lot of shows when you’re living in New York. There are interesting concerts happening every night, almost without exception. Concerts are not relegated to formal venues and clubs. City parks, dirty warehouses, sidewalks, and subway cars yield a diverse array of free and ticketed performances.

BAT FOR LASHES "ALL YOUR GOLD"

Before I truly begin, "All Your Gold" has drawn comparisons to Gotye's "Somebody that I Used Know," and besides the minimal guitar line in the beginning, I don't really know what to say. I don't know the lyrics, except for the part that is the song title. And I'm not going to listen to that song, even for the sake of journalism. Sorry y'all. I'd prefer to decrease any possibility of it getting stuck in my head and this is about Bat for Lashes, anyway.

AURALWEST: A BAND CALLED DEATH

Have you ever heard of Death?

Well if you haven't you're a little late. Only by about 40 years though. You can cut yourself some slack  because you're not alone. Death was a band composed of three black brothers in early 70s Detroit. They formed after seeing an Alice Cooper show and were way ahead of their time. They refused to play the motown that was expected of them and rather opted for a style that 10 years later would become known as punk.

Kanye West Believes He Is a God (duh)

I haven't been really into a Kanye West album since Graduation dropped, and wasn't sure what to expect. I was excited to hear the production when I saw that ArcaDaft Punk, and Hudson Mohawke helped out, and I knew that I can usually count on West to have good production anyway. Being a producer is actually where he got his start! At one point in my life, I really thought of Mr. West as a great hip-hop artist. But the only things that come to mind when I think of contemporary Kanye is his arrogance, that weird outfit he wore, and Kim Kardashian. Sure, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was good, but I didn't really get into it. I never really listened to it on my own, I just heard it everywhere I went for a while.

AURALWEST: CAMERA OBSCURA

Remember when I said that great music will not be brought to you for free this summer... Well I was wrong.Famous Scottish indie pop band will be playing at the Wiltern this Tuesday for approximately 20$, this is not the show of the week, they will also be playing tomorrow (monday) at Amoeba for free. Camera Obscura is a Scottish indie-pop band from Glasgow. They are close friends of Belle and Sebastian and basically the San Antonio Spurs of indie-pop. They are consistant, tight fundamentally, and doing quite well for themselves right now. They play dreamy highly structured songs about love with the beautiful, yet commanding, voice of Tracyanne Campbell leading them.
