Xenia Rubinos (+richard & The Roofer's Union)
Buddhist House // Friday 9PM
Xenia Rubinos has a funky name. Xenia Rubinos sometimes sings like she's Dora the Explorer. Pitchfork likes Xenia Rubinos. Xenia Rubinos's sound grows from a wide range of influences from Caribbean rhythms and beat music to minimalism and indie rock. Be sure to check out all of this "eclectic sound" and more of Xenia Rubinos's quirks, including yelling "bread and coffee" in Spanish repeatedly, at the one and only BuHo this Friday.
The uncapitalized richard is a dope 9-person funk/hip-hop group. They have horns and synths and two MCs. Ask your best friend from high school who now goes to Brown about them.
The Roofer’s Union are an electronic psychedelic rock band from New York. Their sound confidently dabbles in soul, psychedelia and other styles to create an energetic and interesting rock sound. Peep this new video that came out today:
MFDP (+Sam Shillet)
14B Warren // Friday 11PM
Music For Drunk People (aka MFDP), is an all sophomore, capital-R Rock Band with one paramount goal: to make your sloshed ass dance around. Guitars won’t be the only thing turnt up.
Sam "Schoolboy Jew" Shillet is an up-and-coming disc jockey from Queens, NY. He will be deejaying with his trademark equipment of a laptop, youtube, and spotify premium.
Vijay Iyer Trio
Crowell Concert Hall // Saturday 8PM
Vijay Iyer is big in the jazz world right now. His 2009 album Historiocity was nominated for best Jazz album at the Grammys and declared best jazz album of the year by many publications. Iyer will be accompanied by Stephan Crump, a regular member of his renowned trio, and Wes alum Marcus Gilmore. Whether your life has jazz in it or not, this concert will tickle your brain. This is as good as it gets.
Cuddle Magic (+The Sun Parade)
WestCo Café // Saturday 10PM
When you attended the Delpozo show last February at New York Fashion Week, you probably noticed some sweet orchestral pop tunes in the background and wondered who was responsible. Well, look no further. Brooklyn-based Cuddle Magic is making the leap from runway to the WestCo Café this Friday. This six-piece group plays “dance listening music that unfolds in waves of vocal harmony, contrapuntal woodwinds, dense wordplay, and overlapping rhythmic cycles.” Stop by for a fun night of sultry bass clarinet, blaring trumpets, drilling percussion, and fuzz-drenched bass.
Self-described as “roving Northern gents who blaze their guitars”, The Sun Parade is a folk/rock(/psychedelic/disco/bluegrass) band from Northhampton, MA.
