Weekend Preview 11/5 - 11/7
All dogs (+Tiny rick)
EARTH HOUSE // THURSDAY 9:00 PM
All Dogs is a four-piece band from Columbus, OH. These punks have been making music since 2013. Their latest EP, Kicking Every Day, includes endearing and introspective summery jams such as “That Kind of Girl” and “Leading Me Back To You”. Come out and watch some dog lovers play some loud slacker pop.
Half man, half static, Tiny Rick plays some seriously lo-fi power pop. With a discography that reaches back into July of this year, he’s jumped on the scene from nearly nowhere (though reportedly comes from New York). They're back for the second time this semester if you missed them the first go-around.
VUndabar (+The rare occasions & Sloopy coos canyon)
Buho // THURSDAY 8:30 PM
Starting off as a music project between two of the band’s members in their last year of high school, Vundabar has grown into a trio that has toured around the US and Europe. Self described “Sludgy Jangly Pop”, their songs are filled with on-beat guitar riffs that move along in perfect combination with falsetto vocals that build-up to stirring, marvelous, wonderful, and any other words your mom would use to express true joy and excitement. Definitely bring your folks.
Started in a Tufts practice space three years ago, The Rare Occasions, hailing from Boston-via-Providence, play post-punk/prog, garage rock that’s filled with soaring guitar riffs and drum tempos that are so upbeat you’ll find it hard not to move with the music, all of which is combined with catchy and clever lyrics
Sloopy Coos Canyon is going to kick the night off by soothing and shaking you with their punk lullaby
Henry Hall (+ TRot fox & Mcleary mcleary)
EARTH HOUSE // Friday 8:30 PM
Henry Hall '14, who some may remember from his Grand Cousin days, is making the trek from NY back to Wes with swoon-worthy melodies, ambient synths, and clean guitar-sounds. He’s been making some infectious poppy tunes, which are complemented by his beautiful, soulful voice. Budding off of Grand Cousin's sound, Hall's solo work is "kind of an extension of that, moving in a direction that’s more personal to me with lyrics and instrumentation." He’s an Aural Wes fav and is bringing exciting new ideas to music.
Featuring alums and the Rooks members Gabe Gordon '11 on keys and Nate Mondschein '12 on percussion, Fox Trot is a NYC based four-tet that plays fresh, heart-warming soulrock with a twist of funk.
McLeary McLeary is a new student band who plays awesome rock’n’roll-ing tunes :)
GHosts of Jupiter (+ RUi Barbosa & the good lonely)
BuHo // FRIDAY 9:00 PM
This event is sure to be on the Parent's Weekend Preview! Ghosts of Jupiter is from Boston (outer space?!) and plays psychadelic riff-stoner rock. Members of the band have worked in the studio with the likes of Chuck Berry, members of Phish and the Allman Brothers Band. They have a new album coming out this spring, and put on a dynamic live show. Check it out!
Rui Barbosa is a jamfunkrock band that loves bass solos, grilled cheese, and Jonah. It's rumored that they're going to play some new songs, as well as ole' favorites named after your fave Blue's Clues host and Roman Emperor. Come groove, dance and lose (discover?) yourself in the μsic.
The good lonely are freshmen. And we <3 frosh.
Galcher Lustwerk
Eclectic // FRIDAY 11:00 PM
Galcher Lusterwerk is a deep house producer from Cleveland (represent.) He’s been BNT’d on Pitchspork. He’s coming to Eclectic. Galcher Lustwerk is one of the biggest names to come to Wesleyan this semester, and if you’re in the mood to vibe on Saturday, this is the place to be.
Wild belle (+ Slouch & M.E.G.)
EClectic // Saturday 9:30 PM
Chicago sibling duo Wild Belle is stopping by Wes to share their sweet, psychedelic reggae influenced pop rock. After the popularity of their debut LP Isles (2013) their unique sound has taken them everywhere from Coachella to Germany, and has landed them a feature on a Major Lazer track and a song feature in the movie Pitch Perfect. Through it all, the band has maintained the same down-to-earth vibe and has continued to make authentic, groovy music. Think tropical peanut butter.
Slouch likes to jam to Hendrix and other nonsense.
M.E.G. is "three kids who like to rock!"
SHOFCO BENefit concert Featuring Devonaire Ortiz & Zach Berkowitz, Super defense, mom, Bay Faction & swipe right
Westco Cafe // Saturday 10:00 PM
Devonaire Ortiz & Zach Berkowitz are a short guitar/singer duo ready to soothe you with their melodious songs
Super Defense is a self-described lo-fi, slacker rock group that hails from the wonderful city of Syracuse, New York. They’re hitting Wesleyan just one month after their album “Ghoul Summer” was released through the Ghoul Tapes label, also based in Syracuse. So show up to hear some scratchy slow droning that reminds you of hanging out in your shitty garage back home. Rumor has it one of the member's moms will be in attendance--all of the moms are coming to Wes for Parent's Weekend!
Mom insists on going to your classes with you on Friday, and wants to attend every Parent's Weekend event possible. Mom also proudly wears a "Wesleyan Mom" tee, and "loves nothing more than to make you say Wow, I really like this band."
Bay Faction is from Boston. You can contact them at 1-800-BAY-FACTION. They play subtly punk-influenced, twinkle indie pop rock. It's exactly what you think it is.
Swipe Right is back to and they’ll be doling out tasteful covers and ostentatious originals for your aural enjoyment. They play "loud, exuberant songs about such subjects as sleeping, not being able to sleep, turning the music down, deaf great-grandparents, and 20th-century British modernists." I ask: Send a message or keep playing? Swipe Right plans on doing both.
