Weekly Track Roundup #15

Our moms have been and always will be our number one fans. They're the ones who made up the audience of our elementary school graduations and were there to bring us a pair of fresh pants on the first day of kindergarten. While we'll never be able to pay them back, we did make a wicked playlist of all the songs we jam out with them to. So pick out your favorite Moscato, put on some slippers, and listen to the songs that only the mothers of Aural Wes will understand.

"Bobby Jean" - Bruce Springsteen

My mom is a Bruce Springsteen fangirl, but I mean who isn’t? Just listen to all those funky keys and beautifully smoky vocals. I wish I was Bobby Jean. Rock on, mom.

-Cayla Blachman

"Clarity" - Zedd

I tend to jam out in the jar a lot, especially when running errands with the mother. Usually she never comments on my music, but with this song, she always at least bobs her head up and down. Sometimes she even mouths the words!!! That's big for her!!!! Meanwhile I belt the lyrics  at the top of my lungs and wonder whether passing drivers think we're crazy. If they are, they're right. But it's our crazy.

-Emily Feher

"Monday Morning" - FLeetwood MAc

Over the summer, my mom would drive me to and from work every day and we would always sing along to Fleetwood Mac together in the car. I don't spend a lot of time alone with my mom because we're both so busy, so these short car rides were really special.

-Aurora McGuckin

"I'm gonna getcha good!" - Shania Twain

When I was 10,  Shania Twain was something of a Canadian idol to me and my mom. She had a way of perfectly  blending my mom's two favorite genres together--pop and country.  I remember Twain releasing two versions of her album Up :  the red CD being the pop and the green being country. I would secretly hide the green CD, just so my mom would have to play the red one in our car. Also, in the music video for "I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" she flawlessly rocks her bodysuit, putting to shame Britney's ~similar~ music video for "Toxic" released a year later.

"Black Math" - The White Stripes

My mom is the biggest Jack White fan I know. I am most fond of moments when I get to sit shotgun in the Subaru and share in her enthusiasm for any and every song by The White Stripes.

-Megan West

"Sydney A" - Brett Dennen

I so love my mom. We are so painfully similar, but, in the midst of my high school promoted angst and my mother’s subsequent mothering, we didn't have much time to drop from our familial roles and just become fellow humans, the best friends that we are. We would find that time driving to Greenwich, Ct to get haircuts by an amazing man, who my mom has known forever. This song was part of that ritual. She would bounce, hair dangerously falling in front of her eyes, in the drivers seat, while I would lovingly mock her dance moves by attempting a buckled twist in the passenger. We have both since killed this song with replays-- Dennen’s shrieking soulful voice on this song has become a bit too piercing-- but it will always bring me right back to those moments of play with my mom.

-Harrison Nir

"Ebony and Ivory" - Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder

What mom doesn't like Paul McCartney? What mom doesn't like Stevie Wonder? Combined = instant mom song.

-Adam Manson

"Old Friends" - Simon and Garfunkel

While Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel aren't moms, they do their best to sound like them. Well, maybe not the voice of your mother, but the feeling you used to get when she would hold your hand as you crossed the street, or when she swaddled you in blankets as you came down with the flu. On long car rides, after my mom became fed up with "all that distorted crap" and I'd had enough of "all that Sussudio shit", we'd be able to put aside our generational differences to listen to Old Friends.
