As you all know I like concerts. But I love concerts in untraditional venues. This is of course assuming the sound is adequate. What’s better than a Deerhoof show? A Deerhoof show in the natural history museum (true story). I cannot stress how much a venue can make a difference. Kendrick Lamar is apparently great live at music festivals… I wouldn’t know, I saw him in a hockey rink. Venues matter.

Outdoor venues usually have fine acoustics and are a lot of fun. The downside is that the most famous ones usually cost $300 to get into. This Thursday, I have an outdoor concert for you that’s free. Every summer the Santa Monica Pier has an outdoor weekly concert series. This year it’s every Thursday. This week the band Surfer Blood are playing. Surfer Blood are a band out of West Palm Beach Florida. They just released their sophomore album Pythons. Pythons was produced by Gil Norton, producer of the Pixies. Surfer Blood have been known to open for the Pixies on several occasions. Pythons is a guitar driven slacker rock album about the pains of an unhealthy relationship. It’s a quality listen and will probably be a quality concert.  GO!!!
