Bedroom pop, jazz, experimental DJ sets, and a good old sweaty disco: Wes has it all this weekend. Get out and dance before mashed potatoes turn you into a lethargic half-spud/half-human hybrid!
JAZZ NIGHT
ESPWESSO // THURSDAY 10PM
Espwesso’s second jazz night of the year will be opened by a house band featuring Sam Anschell, Becket Cerny, Reed Stutz and Johnnie Gilmore this Thursday. At 11, anyone will be able to take the stage and call a standard. Come and support Wes’ quiet-but-buzzing jazz scene, take a chance to exhibit your new avant-garde experimental synth-jazz song, or just sip coffee and get some work done to some relaxing tunes.
GOBBINJR +THELMA + MOM
ART HOUSE // THURSDAY 8:30PM
New York City’s gobbinjr is a bedroom pop project channeling Frankie Cosmos sounds. The band’s songs are synthy, quiet, and very often funny. The EP, Vom Night, released this month, is a quick spurt of clever tracks written Emma Witner, an NYU student from Wisconsin. She defines gobbinjr as “zit pop”. Check it out.
Thelma is a folk-influenced chamber pop project headed by Natasha Jacobs. Experimental electronics accompany the singer’s dreamy vocals. Thelma, praised by NPR for its subtle spookiness, will release their self-titled album on February 24, 2017.
We missed Mom. The Wesleyan trio (Ben ‘18, Sam ‘18 and Jonah ‘17) plays unique tunes that have been described as peppy/funky/dissonant psychedelic, alternative ~mystery~rock, and they always deliver an upbeat set.
DISCWOMAN CONVERSATION + CDJ WORKSHOP

Founded by Frankie Hutchinson, Emma Burgess-Olson and Christine Tran, Discwoman is a New York-based platform, collective, and booking agency—representing and showcasing cis women, trans women and genderqueer talent in electronic music. Started as a two-day festival in September 2014 at Bossa Nova Civic Club Discwoman has since produced and curated events in 15+ cities—working with over 150 DJs and producers to-date.
Frankie, Emma, and Christine will talk about their experiences defying the status quo in the electronic/techno/house industry. After the conversation they will run a CDJ workshop —all are welcome to come! The talk will start at 5:30, and the CDJ workshop will begin at 6:15. THERE WILL BE FOOD!
GAIKA + DJ HARAM + UMFANG + LSDXOXO

Straight from Brixton, UK, GAIKA is a grime/dancehall/R&B artist, blending bold political commentary with bass-bumping dystopian trap. Come to Malcolm X House this Friday to experience what The FADER describes as what it feels like to “go to a rave at a power plant in a post-apocalyptic industrial wasteland.”
Dj Haram is a queer musician originally from New Jersey, currently based in Philly. As both a producer and DJ, she is known for blending Jersey club, middle east rhythms, and experimental music. Fact Magazine named DJ Haram one of the top 10 club producers to watch in 2016. DJ Haram is a co-founder and resident of Philadelphia’s own free-falling club night ATM(#atmdata) and legal fundraiser party series (f)LAWLESS.
UMFANG is a Discwoman co-founder and holds a monthly residency, Technofeminism, at Bossa Nova Civic Club focusing on emerging talent and an affection for vinyl. Her amorphous polyrhythmic techno productions have been released by 1080p, videogamemusic, and Phinery.
Lsdxoxo is a 24 year-old producer & DJ from New York, by way of Philly; on his GHE20G0TH1K release FUCK MARRY KILL: "I wanted the project to play out like the love child of a Snapped episode and a campfire story. Each of the tracks are like journal entries, chronicling my peaks and valleys throughout the past year. They're in a sort of playful battle with each other, dancing between a need for love and the desire for revenge. I'm a batshit-crazy Gemini with an affinity for over-the-top love experiences, and this project is certainly telling of that. Fuck Marry Kill is the soundscape to that tumultuous love affair you just can't shake. Once you plug your earbuds in you'll either cry like a bitch, or get your 10s" (The FADER).
Diva Night

The second WestCo disco starts this Saturday at 10:00pm in the WestCo Cafe. Female identifying and nonbinary DJs will be tearing shit up on the dance floor all night with sets guaranteed to keep you going until they kick you out at 2:00am. There is a $2 (cash or Venmo) minimum fee or donated menstrual products for entry, and all collected proceeds/donations will be donated to the Prudence Crandall Center for Women.

QNA + LOST BOY + SPECIAL GUESTS

QNA is a New York City band, "merging the highly improvisational, referential idioms of hip-hop and jazz". According to their Facebook, their "cerebral lyrics work in tandem with formidable musicianship to create music both unique and wholly accessible, from reinterpretations of popular jazz standards and hip-hop hits to totally original material."
Lost Boy, Max Gertler and Tyrin (Wesleyan MCs) will start off the night.
