Weekend Preview // 11/20-11/22

It's a big turkey of a weekend.

WESU Freaker’s Ball

Jonathan Toubin (+Lord Lewis)

Eclectic // Thursday 9 PM

Facebook Event

Jonathan Toubin is a rock and soul DJ from New York. A super-groovy guy doing super-groovy stuff. Village Voice calls him “New York’s Best Club DJ NY 2014,” Rolling stone says he is “the most liked man in the soul music scene,” and VICE gave him the title of “New York’s Best DJ.” Clearly, everyone loves Jonathan Toubin, and so should you. He mashes up 50s/60s blues, rock, rhythm, and soul to create spunky-funky-freaky dancin’ fun.

Lord Lewis, also known as the host of the Rumpus Room Radio show on WESU, is a “funk/mojo/freak” DJ who describes himself as disc jockey extraordinaire and super into heavy funk. Will be fun. Learn more.

DJ Cyroos (+Caroqueen)

WestCo Cafe // Friday 9:30 PM

Facebook Event

"J Street U, Middle Eastern Perspectives, WesAmnesty, Wes for Peace and Turath House are v v v v excited to bring you an evening of Arabic, Hebrew and other dance tunes to start your night off right. All proceeds will go to the Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME), an organization that brings together Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli environmentalists to advance sustainable regional development in the Levant."

SHOFCO Benefit Concert

Chef (+Don Froot & JDV+)

Psi U // Friday 10 PM

Facebook Event

Popsicle posters plaster campus… who else could it be? Chef's back. This groovy, sultry, hyphy funk group has served up some of the best party-atmosphere shows on campus. Don’t miss these funkulinary magicians at work in the funkitchen.

Blending styles from that groovy-latin-record-your-mom-plays-in-the-station-wagon to the jazz you've heard in the cafe down the block, Don Froot is that sweet, sweet song that keeps Georgia on your mind.

JDV+ is a cool producer who makes cool music. Lushhh.

Butcher Boy (+Since 1902 & Matan KG)

Earth House // Friday 10 PM

Facebook Event

Butcher Boy is a folky noise quartet from Portland ME. Weathered and raw, prickly and warm, this is music to lose yourself in on a chilly autumn night.

Since 1902 self describe as “Deathcore muppet reggae.” if that doesn’t intrigue you enough to check them out at earth house this weekend, I don’t know what will. Their music is sometimes psychedelic-ish, sometimes folkish, sometimes rock.

Matan KG: Wesleyan’s own. Matan “will be opening with a fruity looped set of covers and originals featuring surprise guest poet Nick Martino.”

Dubbel Dutch

(+False Witness & saarim b2b drones)

Eclectic // Friday 10 PM

Facebook Event

Dubbel Dutch aka Marc Glasser is a “contemporary club shaman”/Brooklyn-based DJ whose forward-thinking club music ascends the boundaries of the pop music it draws upon. And, like all of our favorite producers here at Wes, he’s worked with Le1f.

False Witness spins #KUNQ sound, described by Factmag as “a fusion of underground and queer-centric dance sounds from the US, the Caribbean and beyond.” His skeletal, hard hitting beats will ask you “What political machines of oppression are you buying into? Which societal mechanisms do you have to destroy?”

saarim- You’ve seen him. You probably like him.

drones- or is it drvnes? drxnes?

Slow Parade (+Oh, Oh Ecstasy & Indian Twin)

Buho // Friday 10:30 PM

Facebook Event

Slow Parade will take your hand and take you past noise. It may be uncomfortable first, like the best things in life.

Oh, Oh Ecstasy tag themselves as “crack rock hanky panky” on Bandcamp. “poser pop psychadelic punk. shoegaze” is also in there.

Indian Twin pull gooey melodies out of the 50s and 60s to make super-danceable pop. They’re from Tufts.

Laura Stevenson (+Shiffley & Since 1902)

Earth House // Saturday 9 PM

Facebook Event

Laura Stevens has been described as ‘a slice of indie-pop heaven with a kitchen-sink mentality: chiming guitars, strings, violins, and Stevenson's soaring voice all stack atop one another, and the results are shimmering pop songs.’” Listen to her here.

Shiffley is a five-piece Alternative Rock band with a synthy-pop flair based out of Long Island, NY. (They're trying to coin the genre, Bubblegum Synth Rock. Is it catching on yet?) From their willingness to lyrically dive into the most curious paradigms of our society, to fun, singable melodies in every song, you'll be humming along for days!”

Since 1902... A Wes double-header! See them again after the Earth House show Friday night.

Schwab (+Daniel Pope)

Ruho // Saturday 9:45 PM

Facebook Event

Daniel Pope will play acoustic set.

Schwab's brooding indie-rock returns for an intimate show.

The Retinas (+Tangiers)

ArtMuho // Saturday 10 PM

Facebook Event

The Retinas just dropped their first full-length today. It's a sunny, crunchy expanse of rough-and-tumble indie rock. Serious crooning and guitar chops await.

Tangiers rock out on planet similar to that of the The Retinas. Bangers galore. It'll be a grand ole rock n' roll time.

Snow Wite (+Period Bomb)

WestCo Cafe // Monday 9 PM

Facebook Event

Come out for an early show before you leave for Thanksgiving! WestCo Guidance may show up,

Vice called Andy Cary “a pretty wacky rock ‘n’ roll cat with spazzed-out hair who’s on a prolific roll right now making hilarious videos featuring mastered flange and serious babes.” Snow Wite is Andy’s power pop pet project.

Period Bomb is a brand new fem punk band from LA on their first US tour!
